Research Councils = research council grants. 
Industry = industrial research contracts. 
Other = research income from charities, Government, and international sources. 

The bigger a weighting, the bigger the impact on the final league table. So if research council grants are the funding source that you expect HEFCE to use to separate the players from the spectators, then put a high value in that box. If it's the feed through to industry that you expect to be prioritised, then put the bigger number there.

All the data we use on research income are drawn from HESA's Finance Plus statistics product and cover the period 2002 to 2006.

Here are some of the factors that might affect your thinking, and HEFCE's.

Research Council grant awards are highly competitive. Funds are limited and fewer than one in three applications are successful. But the amount of money available varies between one research area and another. The amount you need to run a project also varies according to the sort of research that you do: theory is usually cheaper than laboratory work. However, all the applications have been through the scrutiny of peer reviewers so, whether it's a lot of money or a little, an award should be a sign of research quality in ideas and opportunities.

Contracts from industry are a sign that discriminating users of research knowledge have an application in mind for your work. They want to engage with developing your research into something potentially profitable. That plays to some important agendas led by the innovation side of the Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills. It may be that research which attracts funding from potential users is an important sign of another kind of 'impact' - not blue-skies citation impact but economic impact.

And don't forget there is also money from charities, Government departments and overseas (collected together here as 'Other'), whose relative importance will also have to be weighed.
