Funding opportunities, postgraduate student numbers and publication and citation cultures vary between disciplines. We can't use data to compare engineering with endocrinology and get a sensible answer. So, the first step is to select your subject area.

The RAE Predictor uses metrics grouped around familiar subject categories: the Units of Assessment (UoAs) used in the Research Assessment Exercise until 2001. We are not using the RAE 2008 categories because we cannot yet guess the way people have grouped themselves in new areas.

Not all subjects are covered. There are problems in mapping between the various sources of the data you will see in later screens, particularly between HESA funding data held at cost-centre level (34 categories) and RAE data (68 Units of Assessment).

The 17 subjects listed in the drop down menu are those where we have adequate data from all the sources needed to predict performance. Most of the subjects are located in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, medicine) category.

Note that - instead of being split - Mathematics is treated as a single subject, and data have been aggregated accordingly.
